Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Albert Hsu is a ninth-generation Taiwanese native with a distinguished and eclectic artistic lineage. His grandfather, an experienced woodworker, specializes in crafting traditional Japanese geta sandals.

Albert inherited his grandfather’s mastery of woodworking and craftsmanship. Raised by his parents—a respected pediatrician and a historian—he received his education in public schools in both Taiwan and Canada. He later studied sculpture and visual arts in British Columbia for three years before entering the Furniture Program at the California College of the Arts, where he graduated in 2008.
